PRESS RELEASE
LITERACY BOARD OF
DIRECTORS APPOINT NEW EXCUTIVE DIRECTOR
Literacy
volunteers of Aroostook Board of Directors
President, Dan MacDonald, recently announced
on behalf of the board, that David Dow, ED.D,
has been named as the new Executive Director.
Dave, a native of Presque Isle, brings a long
and distinguished career in education and
public service to the literacy volunteer
organization, as a former teacher, principal,
and retired University of Maine (Orono)
professor and outreach education
administrator.
Dr. Dow is
recognized nationally and internationally as
having been a leader in marine resource
conservation and development education. He
served as director for marine outreach and Sea
Grant Advisory Services, and the Lobster
Institute at the University during his long
career there.
After
retiring from the University in 1996, Dave
spent several years establishing local
manufacturing facilities for the production of
conservation related commercial fishing and
aquaculture equipment in Europe, Africa, New
Zealand, and Canada for the Riverdale Mills
Corporation in Massachusetts, eventually
creating and becoming president of
Aqua-Pacific Ltd., in British Columbia,
Canada. Aqua-Pacific is now one of the largest
manufacturers of aquaculture growing, handling
and live storage equipment in North America
today.
Many in the
county business community will recognize Dave,
through his family’s business, Northern
Marketing Strategies (NMS), which he helped
develop in northern Maine and western New
Brunswick, upon his return to the area in
2002. When his son, Zac, began leading NMS in
2007, Dave began working with the Caribou
Adult Education Program, where he now serves
as a teacher for adult basic education. He
also coordinates the Caribou Learning Center’s
college transitions program, a college
preparatory program for adults in central
Aroostook County.
Dave will be
working closely with the adult education
community in Aroostook County, to champion the
cause of the literacy volunteer organization
of providing free and confidential teaching to
any adult, on any learning level who desires
to increase their literacy skills. Dow will be
soliciting everyone’s help in creating an army
of literacy volunteers in every corner of the
county, who are willing to help in positively
changing lives through the gift of the power
to read.
Dave can be
